Houseware "Oscars"

Just a month before the Oscars were handed out in Hollywood and weeks before the mammoth housewares show during the first week of March in Chicago, HomeWorld Magazine held a luncheon ceremony to present the 2013 Housewares Design Awards.

 

Here is a list of the winners and, in each category, my own preferred runners up.  Have a look and decide in each case whether you'd vote along with the judges or with me.

Cookware and Bakeware

Winner: The Nambe Chirp Kettle, sculpture for your stovetop" took the prize.

My Runner Up: Cristel's L "Removable Handle" collection in which detaching the automatic locking handles transforms each pan and skillet from an efficient cooking appliance into a serving dish.

 

Countertop Cooking & Beverage Appliances

Winner:  Jura Capresso's tiny Jura ENA Micro 9 One Touch Cappuccino Machine brews cappuccinos, macchiatos and cremas at the touch of a button.

My Runner Up:  I adore the Crock-Pot Lunch Crock Food Warmer with a snug handle and cord to heat up lunch at your desk.

 

Countertop Food Prep Appliances

Winner:  Edgeware Angle Adjust Electric Knife Sharpener has a knob that automatically adjusts both the coarse and fine interlocking wheels to the correct angle, sharpening a knife's both sides simultaneously.

         

Countertop Kitchenware

Winner:  The Triscale Kitchen Scale folds flat for storage and opens its three digital arms providing a platform for the bowl to be weighed.

My Runner Up:  Taso Mixing Bowl Scale incorporates the scale right into the mixing bowl measuring by weight or volume.

         

 

Cutlery & Cutting Tools

Winner:  Kyocera's Limited LTD Cutlery Series 6 echoes Japanese cutlery with polished black ceramic blades and a handcrafted Pakka wood handle.

My Runner Up:  Five high-grade stainless steel cutting wheels in the Zyliss FastCut Herb Tool makes quick minces of fresh parsley, mint, basil and more.

 

Floor Care and Cleaning Appliances

Winner:  The bagless, upright Electrolux Precision Brushroll Clean with a 3-in-1 Versatool attachment is designed to remove the likes of tangled hair from the brushroll into the dust cup for a no-mess clean. 

 My Runner Up:  Dyson's DC44 Animal cordless vacuum uses a light aluminum wand that reaches from floor to ceiling and is detachable for up-close tasks.

 

 

Gadgets and Kitchen Tools

Winner:  The patented Peel Back design of the Swiss Curve Peeler removes peels by directing them backwards, away from what the user is peeling.


My Runner Up:  The double-lever design of the Drosselmeyer Caretta Shellfish Pliers minimizes effort in cracking and breaking apart shellfish while keeping the meat intact.

 

Home and Outdoor Decor

Winner:  With live crystals embedded in an adhesive, the GLOWr Wayfinding Illumination Discs light up paths and patios with a greener alternative to batteries and bulbs.

 My Runner Up:  High-powered LED lamps in Simpla's Focus Beam Lamp adjust to a beam ranging from 3 inches to 31 inches wide to accommodate a variety of tasks.

 

Home Environment Appliances

Winner:  Swizz Style's Jasmine Aroma Diffuser is equipped with an interval setting allowing it to alternate between 10 minutes on and 20 minutes off for an extra fine mist lasting up to 24 hours on one filling.

My Runner Up:  Made of recyclable materials, with an ultra-silent fan, the Blueair Sense Air Cleaner features an interactive motion-sensitive tempered glass top enabling users to change air-cleaning speed with simple, gentle hand movements.

 

Home Organization, Laundry Care and Non-Electric Cleaning

Winner:  Reacting to the motion of the hand, the Simplehuman Semi-Round Sensor Can responds to the user's behavior opening and closing the receptacle when appropriate.

My Runner Up: Casabella's Quick Scrub Double Sided Microfiber Spray Mop features a microfiber head that flips over to double the floor coverage. 

 

 

Personal, Health and Garment Care

 Winner:  Besides an ergonomic design and rubberized grip, the affordably priced Panasonic Arc3Men's Wet/Dry Shaver has a new cleaning design with a shutter that can opens to allow water to flow through freely removing debris without requiring removal of the outer foil to clean the inner blades.

My Runner Up:  Violight's Rockee Toothbrush bobs, weaver and wobbles on a chubby colorful base making teeth cleaning a treat for children.

 

Tableware, Serveware and Beverageware

Winner:  The Twist Adjustable Aerator's rotating stainless steel band settings adjust allowing the user to regulate how much air is mixing with the wine, decanting in the appropriate time from zero to six hours. 

My Runner Up:  The one-hand flip-lever lid of the Flip & Sip, 12-Ounce Vacuum Mug revolves to lay flat against the side of the mug and presses open and shut to dispense hot beverages.


Green House Awards

Winner:  The patented non-spill design of Simple Wave LLC's Calibowl Non-spill, 5-piece Iconic Mixing Bowl Set features a curved under lip that pushes food onto the utensil, preventing spills over the edge. 

My Runner Up:  Powered by indirect light, Component Design Northwest's Solar Thermometer delivers accurate temperature readings without requiring batteries.
